Oh boy, here we go again…
Looks like we’ve got another detail dump on the upcoming Wolverine 3 film which is set to drop next year. While both details and rumors have been steadily rolling out now for months, it would seem as though this film has had quite the back and forth identity crisis.
Today it was released that the new film would be simply titled, Logan, despite the fact that early last summer, the prevailing rumor/insider leak claimed that the film would be called, Weapon X. The film was originally rumored to roughly follow the Old Man Logan storyline from the comics, however, given that’s an almost literal impossibility since Fox only has the rights to one of the main characters from that story, Wolverine, it would be hard to imagine how that adaptation would play out in a way that wouldn’t cause fans to burn theaters down. This actually led a lot of credence to the rumored Weapon X title since that story isn’t necessarily bound by cannon given that we’ve already seen two different iterations of how Wolverine became the Wolverine.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Old Man Logan comic, it’s basically a road trip story that features Wolverine and Hawkeye working together to take out a version of the Red Skull that has already conquered the whole of the United States and divided it up among the worlds villains. Most of the other heroes are dead and the Hulk has a family who, together, reign terror upon the citizens of their region, Old Man Logan included. We’ve known for quite some time that Patrick Stewart would reprise his role as Professor X in the new movie and it’s largely been implied that he may in fact fulfill Hawkeye’s roll, however, it’s pretty clear that the rest of the story won’t really play out according to the comic arch.
In addition to the new title, we also got an image of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X along with a new poster for the film. It’s curious to note that in the poster you see a small child holding Wolverine’s hand, whose claws also happen to be protruding out (child protective services anyone?!). It’s been rumored for a while that this film could introduce the character, X-23, who is a young, female clone of Wolverine who has the same power-set that he does, but only two claws on each hand instead of three. It’s also worth nothing that in the Old Man Logan story arch, Wolverine does have a family who are killed at the behest of the Hulk, so this could imply that Logan does in fact have a family in the movie and if he does, I’m not looking forward to seeing how their futures unfold…
It’s also worth noting that, after the success of Deadpool, it was announced that this film would be rated R, so yeah, expect some serious bloodshed and possible family killing.
So what do you think of the new title and released images? Are you hoping for an Old Man Logan adaptation or are you looking for something entirely new? Should they have just gone with the Weapon X title or should they have come up with something new and original just for the final installment of this film? As always, give us your two cents in the comments section below.
Logan is set to hit theaters on March 3rd, 2017 and stars Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart in their tried and true roles.
