In an odd twist of fate, Marvel announced recently that long time Spiderman love interest, Mary Jane Watson, would be joining team Iron Man in the new run of books, titled Invincible Iron Man, set to come out this fall. This is part of the post-Secret Wars, All New/All Different Marvel initiative that’s set to relaunch the overall continuity of the universe.
There’s no word yet on exactly how MJ will be making the transition or why she’s leaving Spiderman, only a few brief blurbs from writer Brian Michael Bendis on his motivations for the transition. According to Bendis, “I [have] spent most of my time at Marvel writing the teenage version of Mary Jane [in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN]. This is a grown-up woman who has been through a lot. She seems like one of those characters that went down certain paths that may not have panned out the way she hope; and she’s ready for a kick ass second act.”
As far as their relationship dynamic is concerned, Bendis is tight lipped, yet explains that, “They know each other. She used to live in Avengers Tower. But that’s all I’m going to say for now because what kind of relationship they end up having is a big part of what I would like people to buy the book for. But what I can tell you is that it is new territory for both Tony and Mary Jane. And that is pretty exciting to write.”
We’re not sure if it’s time to launch the ships yet or not, but it does sort of sound like Bendis might just be setting Tony up with a new love interest, but if this is true, how will Peter Parker take it given his mixed past with Stark and what about Pepper Potts, Starks long time love interest? Only time will tell, but we’ll find out in the all new Invinceable Iron Man that’s set to launch this October.
