Without question, the release and massive success of Deadpool has a lot of people asking a lot of questions and it could change the face of comic book movies as they’ve come to be known. While some don’t seem to fully understand what the success of Deadpool really could mean in terms of versatility in the genre, the effects are being seen almost immediately as Fox announced interest today in making the upcoming third installment of the Wolverine franchise rated R.
Apparently during a toy fair today, Fox handed out a pamphlet that acknowledged the anticipated adult rating. Posted by Comicbook.com, the pamphlet lays out the basic details of the film including the release date, confirmation of returning franchise director James Mangold, and star Hugh Jackman.
If it’s true, this would be Fox’s first outing outside of Deadpool at making a rated R related X-Men film and could make a lot of people really happy given Wolverine’s fairly dark story lines. It would also be the first film to fully allow Wolverine to use his claws as the inclusion of blood and gore is often scaled way back in order to achieve a PG-13 rating.
While we would certainly like to see a rated R Wolverine film, it’s also hard to imagine how it could fit tonally with the rest of the franchise. It might be a little late in the game for such a dramatic shift and we’d hate to see them shoe in a bunch of F-bombs, gratuitous gore, and nudity just because they can, but if the plot of the film warrants it, then by all means go right ahead.
So what do you think, are you happy about this potential news? Do you think it’s too little too late? As always, let us know what you think in the comments section below!
