Our favorite trailers often tend to deliver a healthy spot of deflection. Sure, they start off simply enough, but we can smell the cinematic sleight of hand coming from a mile away which we know will ultimately turn the initial premise on it’s head. While it may be no mystery that the big reveal is on its way, the first new trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies completely nails it, leaving you hungry for more; exactly what all good trailers should do.
It opens with a light classical piano arrangement, narration from someone that sounds as though they could be an English charm school instructor, and a garish ball full of graceful revelers. Behold the period pageantry, the horse riding outfits, the bonnets, and the gowns. Behold the boyishly handsome actors with jaws that look like they were carved out of wood. Behold the English countryside, the manors filled with busts and banners, lit by candelabras. This is, without question, a lavish period piece.
Upon it’s initial presentation it actually looks as though we might be getting a legitimate film adaptation of the classic Jane Austin novel. After all, Pride and Prejudice has only been adapted 10 times before in a variety of mediums and the last time was mere two years ago, but then again, based on the films title, we patiently await the twist…
Wait is that gore oozing out of that girls eye? Wait, why is Elizabeth Bennet duel wielding daggers? Okay, now there’s karate kicks and hard rock riffs? Of course there is, and the best part of all of this is that the characters play it all so straight. No one is winking at the camera. This is a story of refinement and manners filled with legions of the rotting undead and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
This new trailer paints a picture of a film that looks to be some kind of weird hybrid between Shawn of the Dead, Sucker Punch, and Downton Abby which leaves us with a ferocious need to see the final product. The horror/action/comedy genre is something that isn’t often executed well, but on the rare occasion that it is, it delivers one of the best and most satisfying viewing experiences.
A note about the song choice. Sleigh Bells is a band whose music gets featured in a lot of action trailers, not unlike Rob Zombie in the late 90’s, but this trailer’s use of their single A/B Machines is pitch perfect. We can’t wait.
