It’s not at all uncommon these days for celebrities to petition the audience for their shot at a major league roll and one of the best new examples of this is UFC fighter, Ronda Rousey, and her campaign to play the character of Captain Marvel in Marvel Studios upcoming film, Captain Marvel.
While she’s made it well known among her fans that she would really love to play the role, we haven’t really heard anything from Marvel on the subject, that is, until now.
It an interview with IGN, Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, was asked directly about how he felt in regard to Rousey’s active voice in pursuing the role.
“I love it. That happens occasionally, and I think that’s a testament more to the strength of the characters. Going back to my early days at Marvel, there were always various people campaigning to be Wolverine. I guess that was pre-Twitter and pre-Internet days, but still for some reason would pop up in Wizard Magazine. Wizard Magazine would always have ‘this person wants to play this role!’ It’s a testament to how great the characters are that it appeals to such a wide range of talented, talented people,” explained Feige.
While this is fairly non-commital, Feige further went on to explain that, “You look at the ways we’ve cast our films in the past and it’s always about who’s the best person to inhabit the character, whether that is an actor like Chris Hemsworth who bulks up, or a wrestler like Dave Bautista, who played Drax, who ends up being an amazing performer, an amazing actor and a clever and witty and pointed comedic actor. For us, it’s sitting down with people and starting to meet people and as the script takes shape and as we start to build who the character should be and finding the right person to match it up. We haven’t necessarily started sitting down with people yet and meeting on that part.”
Well we’re guessing that Rousey won’t be the one who inevitably winds up with the role, we do applaud her enthusiasm. If people like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dave Bautista can bring their special brand of charisma to the big screen, we don’t see why someone like Rousey can’t, although we have yet to see a lot of her on the big screen, her role in Furious 7 left us feeling like maybe she needs to study up a bit on her acting chops before taking on a role like Carol “Captain Marvel” Danvers, but then again, you never know, she could surprise everyone.
What do you think though? Would Ronda Rousey make a good Captain Marvel or is it just fun to kind of think about? Who would be your perfect Captain Marvel? Personally, we’d like to see someone like Kristen Bell take on the role as her special brand of humor could pair well with the rest of The Avengers roster, but we’re always up for alternate suggestions.
