Lori Petty Joins Gotham as Some kind of ‘Proto’ Joker

:::If you’re not caught up on Gotham, beware of spoilers:::

For those of you who watched Gotham‘s big return last week, you know that things are starting to heat-up (or cool down as it were) in a big way. Hugo Strange’s introduction (as played by B.D. Wong) raises a lot of questions and the debut of Mr. Freeze as what appears to be a mostly flushed out version of his comic book counter part was a bit unexpected. With Penguin under lock and key, the Riddler on a continued downward spiral, and the inevitable arrival of Azrael on the way, it seems hard to imagine that the show runners for Gotham could possibly want to throw anything more at us, but late last week Fox released images of a new character, played by Tank Girl alum, Lori Petty, which has us all raising our eyebrows.

It was announced last fall that Petty would be joining the cast and according to Variety, “Petty will play Jeri, the flamboyant and enigmatic hostess of an underground club where mass murder and art are celebrated in equal measure. Jeri gives clues to Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) during his hunt for his parents’ killer, but she and her gang of merry maniacs are less helpful when Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) comes calling.”

While that all sounds fine and good, it’s the photos that Fox released that have us scratching our heads as her aesthetic is that of known Batman big-bad, the Joker. In fact, her makeup and costuming are very reminiscent of what we saw from Heath Ledger in Christoper Nolan’s, The Dark Knight, however, this isn’t the first time that Gotham has hinted at a Joker origin. Cameron Monaghan’s late season 1 and early season 2 portrayal of the character, Jarome Valeska, lead many to assume that he would eventually grow into the notorious clown prince of crime, but the last we saw of Monaghan’s Valeska, he was stabbed in the neck, laying on stretcher, and presumed to be dead. Many have speculated that his ‘death’ would in fact be short lived and that he could somehow have been saved or resurrected, potentially at the hands Dr. Hugo Strange.

While little is known right now about how Petty’s character will play into the grand scheme of things, her character’s striking similarities to the Joker can’t be simply explained away by coincidence.

So what do you think? Do you think Petty will somehow tie into the inevitable rise of the Joker or is this nothing more than a slide of hand trick? Do you think Monaghan will return and steal her visage to use as his own or is he dead as door nails? As always, let us know what you think in the comments section below.
