Leonardo DiCaprio to Make NEW Captain Planet Movie; Can it Work?

When it comes to weird movie news, this might be one of the weirdest and strangest bit of news we’ve heard in a while, but in the same right, we’re thoroughly intrigued.

In a report that came out earlier this week from The Hollywood Reporter, it would appear that Leonardo DiCaprio’s  production company, Appian Way, in conjunction with Paramount Pictures, are set to produce and adapt a new and updated version of Captain Planet for the big screen.

If you were a kid in the 1990’s, you’ll probably remember the Captain and his Planeteers as they sought to right the ecological wrongs of world polluting baddies. The show focused on five kids who were given special rings that could control the natural elements. When the powers of the rings combined, they would summon Captain Planet. It was a great show that taught a lot of children the values of reducing, reusing, and recycling while giving them tips on how to be generally more green.

The original show featured a melange of voice talent from across the industry including the likes of Wh0opi Goldberg, LaVar Burton, Danny Glover, Neil Patrick Harris, Mark Hamill, Casey Kasem, Johnathan Winters, Sting, Macolm McDowell, Martin Sheen, Tim Curry, Meg Ryan, Ed Asner, and Jeff ‘Freaking’ Goldblum along with many, many more. It was the pinnacle of 1990’s ecotainment that reached millions of children around the world and can still be found playing in syndication today.

It’ll be interesting to see how they go about updating that and what kinds of issues they’ll choose to address in the updated version. It’s clear that most of the same issues that existed in the 1990’s are still extremely prevalent today like global warming (climate change), overuse of fossil fuels, and unwanted chemicals in the environment, but can they do so in a way where the movie won’t immediately be dismissed as child corrupting political propaganda by climate denying pundits?

It’s sad to say, but at the heart of it, the show and inevitably the upcoming film, are controversial. While most people say that it promotes good science along with a variety of helpful suggestions that they everyday person can follow to better the environment, there are always those who say it’s nothing more than an attack on the fossil fuels industry.

Leonardo DiCaprio has long been a voice for environmentalism so it really comes as no surprise that this is the kind of property his production company would seek out. In 2007 he wrote, produced and narrated an environmental documentary called, The 11th Hour and just today, his latest work, Before the Flood, hits theaters just ahead of it’s October 30th debut on National Geographic. DiCaprio both produces and stars in the film which is directed by Fischer Stevens. Martin Scorsese is the executive producer and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross worked on the soundtrack. The film also features the likes of Bill Clinton, Elon Musk, Pope Francis, Barak Obama, and John Kerry. In addition his eco-film career, DiCaprio also runs the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which seeks to raise awareness for a variety of environmental issues.

This won’t be the first time that someone’s tried to adapt a film version of Captain Planet as the film had been previously in the development phase of at Sony, but due to time delays their rights to the property lapsed. It’s being said that DiCaprio and crew are set to tap writers Jono Matt and Scream Queen’s star, Glen Powell to write the script, but its currently unknown/undecided who will star in the film, but based on the franchises history of mega-star support, it wouldn’t be a big surprise to eventually see some huge names attached.
