Donald Glover Takes Star Wars and Making Atlanta the “Twin Peaks” for Rappers

In a recent appearance on The Ellen Show, Star Wars newest cast member, Donald Glover, was able to open up a little bit about his newley acquired role as Lando Calrissian. Glover will be playing a younger version of the character as originally played by Billy Dee Williams in the upcoming Han Solo solo film.

Glover took the time to explain that the role is a bit personal for him. He explains to host Ellen DeGeneres that as a child his father had given him a Lando Calrissian action figure as his very first toy. He also jokes that his mother told him to not screw it up, because apparently she’s a fan of good ol’ Billy Dee. According to Glover, “I told my dad immediately. He was like, ‘Aww.’ My mom was in the back; she was like, ‘Don’t mess it up! Don’t mess this up!’ ‘Cause Billy Dee — like, that’s hers.”

Glover was on the show to promote his new FX show, Atlanta, for which he writes, stars in, and produces. Of the show, Glover explains that, “I just wanted to make Twin Peaks with rappers which was like, at the time, people were like, ‘I don’t know what that is?’ and I was like, I did it, because it’s very particular. I just wanted to show what it was like growing up in Atlanta. It felt like I always had these weird feelings and we tried to exude that.”
