Captain Marvel to Get New MCU Origin and How it Should Go

We’re getting some interesting news today out of the Marvel camp which revolves around the new upcoming Captain Marvel movie suggesting that this version of the character might not fall exactly in line with the version we all know and love. With that in mind, it sounds as though they may have some pretty solid justification for the character change up.

During a podcast interview called Any Time with Vin Forte, Marvel scribe, Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor), casually explained that their intent for the upcoming Marvel feature is to change, or at least slightly modify, the origin story for Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel due to it’s striking resemblance to the Green Lantern’s origin. Let’s face, if there’s a movie out there that you don’t want to watch again, it’s the Green Lantern, so this is likely for the better. It will also allow them to better tie Carol Danvers into the modern MCU which has managed to maintain a fairly solid continuity over the course of their previously released thirteen film franchise.

According to Perlman;

I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.

While we’re definitely open to the idea of changing things up a bit, it would seem reasonable that they wouldn’t want to stray too far from the farm either, because we want a Carol Danvers that has the hot shot bravado of a Top Gun pilot with the sensibilities of a true Marvel superhero. If her background is drastically different, it could have some fundamental changes on the character herself and we tend to think that she’s pretty great as is.

Instead of getting too crazy, imagine this; let’s say that Danvers is a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D. In the comics she’s an Air Force pilot just like Green Lantern’s, Hal Jordan, and this works because we already know and are familiar with S.H.I.E.L.D. and it wraps her into the current MCU continuity. We also know that S.H.I.E.L.D. has had dealings with the Kree and the Kree relatives, the Inhumans, who currently happen to dominate the show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Perhaps this version of Danvers is or was a top level S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot who was injured in a crash and maybe she’s subjected to a similar treatment to the one that resurrected Agent Coulson in order to save her life. Only this time, the effects are largely different. You could even add some terrigen mist into the mix if you wanted to, although that would technically make her an Inhuman. For those who don’t know, in the comics Danvers was caught in an explosion with Kree soldier Mar-Vell and his DNA managed to merge with hers imbuing her with superhuman abilites.

On Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. we’ve seen that the organization has a Kree soldier kept in cryo-freeze and it could turn out that the frozen alien is no other than Mar-Vell. While we realize this is fairly unlikely given the sort of icy relationship Marvel TV and Marvel Studios seem to have at the moment, it would be a GREAT way to tie the show back into the MCU in a pretty significant way.

But what do you think? Do you have any ideas as to how they should change up her origin or do you think they should keep it as is. As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
