News came round recently that there’s talk of an upcoming Blue Beetle/Booster Gold buddy comedy from DC/Warner Brothers Studios. There’s not a lot known about the movie so far and in all reality, it could easily be just a rumor, especially given DC’s “no jokes” in their movie policy, but then again, stranger things have happened.
According to the rumor mill, Greg Berlanti (known best for show-running the CW’s Arrow and The Flash), will be taking the reigns on the project and that screenwriter Zak Penn [The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers] might be getting courted for script writing duties. This could make for a pretty great pair given their histories, but the comedy angle is certainly something that DC has yet to explore. If they’re willing to branch out it could be their answer to Gaurdians of the Galaxy, yet how would characters like these fit into the overtly dark and bleak nature of their already established characters?
For those who might be unaware, Blue Beetle is a silver age comic who has had three incarnations over the years with varying origins, whereas Booster Gold was initially introduced in 1986 as a showboating football stud from the future who came back in time to utilize his future tech to help him be a hero. Of course his outlandish, narcissistic nature backfire, but he eventually overcomes his own self imposed obstacles and becomes a true hero to the point where he actually becomes a member of the Justice League.
We’ll keep an eye on this to see how it pans out, but it would be nice to breath a bit of humor into the DC lineup of films which, to date, have been overtly dark, dry, and borderline painful to watch, but what do you think? Is this a smooth move for DC or should they get the hell out of film and stick to television where they have so far done a pretty good job?
